In 1996, the Medical Faculty of The University of Hong Kong received a generous donation from Dr Cheng Yu Tung to establish the Dr Cheng Yu Tung Fellowships. The objective of this Fellowships is to support Fellows from Mainland China to undertake clinical attachment, health care management and clinical research training under the relevant Departments/Schools of the Medical Faculty. The scheme was revamped in 2015 with a newly defined focus on clinical training. It aims to attract high calibre clinicians with the clear vision to strive for excellence and the determination to contribute to healthcare and clinical advancement in Mainland China. This scheme awards up to 34 Fellowships each year.

  1. Regulations
    1. The Fellowships shall be known as the “Dr Cheng Yu Tung Fellowships”.
    2. The objective of the Fellowships is to promote academic and expertise exchange. It provides support for individual Fellows to undertake clinical attachment, health care management or clinical research training in the Medical Faculty. The duration of the Fellowships ranges from one to four months.
    3. The Fellowships are open to staff members nominated by Deans/Heads of tertiary medical institutions in Mainland China, as approved by the Committee of Management, or by Faculty members.
    4. The Fellowships shall be awarded in the following categories.  Details are set out in the “Categories of Awards and Emoluments” (below):
      a) Clinical Professorial Fellow
      b) Senior Clinical Fellow
      c) Clinical Fellow
      d) Senior Clinical Research Fellow
      e) Clinical Research Fellow
      f) Health Care Management Fellow
    5. The Dean/Head of the medical institution who nominates a candidate for categories 4(b), (c), (d) and (e) for a Fellowship award shall outline the basis for the nomination and the expected achievements during the individual’s training.
    6. A Fellowship award for categories 4(b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be made on condition that satisfactory progress in training is maintained throughout its tenure.  An award may be terminated at any time if the Committee of Management considers the progress unsatisfactory.
    7. The award of Fellowships under categories 4(a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be subject to the limited registration approved by The Medical Council of Hong Kong.
    8. Insurance cover for dismemberment or accidental death in the amount of HK$100,000 during travel related to the Fellowships and throughout the period of the Fellowships shall be provided.  A Fellow shall be eligible for primary medical care under the University’s Health Scheme during his/her period of study in Hong Kong.
    9. After returning to the Mainland at the end of the period of study, a Fellow shall be required to serve the nominating medical school for a period of not less than three years.  Deans/Heads who nominate candidates for the Fellowships will be expected to draw up appropriate regulations to ensure that this objective is achieved.
    10. Fellows under categories 4(a) and (f) will be required to submit a report within 3 months upon completion of the Fellowship, and Fellows under categories 4(b), (c), (d) and (e) and the Deans/Heads of their home institutions are required to submit an assessment report on the Fellows’ achievements during the three years after returning to the Mainland upon completion of training.
    11. The Fellowships may also be used to support other activities pertaining to medical training and research, subject to consensus from the Donor and the Dean.
       
  2. Administrative Arrangement
    1. The annual grant from the Donor shall be made to the University and will be administered by the University’s Finance and Enterprises Office.  This Office will prepare an annual financial report.
    2. There shall be a Committee of Management comprising the following:
      a) A Faculty member appointed by the Faculty Board (Chairman)
      b) Dr Cheng Yu Tung or his representative (Dr YK Sun)
      c) Dean of Medicine or his representative
      d) A representative from clinical departments
      e) Co-opted Member(s) where appropriate
    3. The Committee of Management shall administer the funds, select Fellows, report to the Faculty Board on the progress of the Scheme, and be authorised to terminate a Fellowship.
    4. Applications shall be invited for the Senior Clinical Fellow, Clinical Fellow, Senior Clinical Research Fellow, Clinical Research Fellow and Health Care Management Fellow in April each year through advertisement in leading medical journals and selected medical institutions/universities in Mainland China.  For Clinical Professorial Fellows, Departments/Schools of the Medical Faculty will be invited to nominate suitable candidates.
    5. A progress report on the Fellowships shall be submitted to the Donor and the Faculty Board annually.
  1. Clinical Professorial Fellow (normally 4 awards each year) for a visiting period of 1 month

    Emoluments:
    (a) HK$33,000 on a pro-rata basis (honorarium); and
    (b) HK$3,500 (round-trip economy airfare from the original city in Mainland China to Hong Kong)*

    Objective:
    To provide support for candidates to undertake clinical/research exchange.

    Qualification:
    Suitably qualified clinical academics at professorial level from tertiary institutions in Mainland China.

  2. Senior Clinical Fellow (normally 7 awards each year) for a training period of 3 months

    Emoluments:
    (a) HK$33,000 per month on a pro-rata basis (honorarium); and
    (b) HK$3,500 (round-trip economy airfare from the original city in Mainland China to Hong Kong)*

    Objective:
    To provide support for candidates to acquire advanced clinical skills and knowledge.

    Qualification:
    Candidates possessing a medical first degree from recognised tertiary institutions and currently working as Vice-Chief Physician (副主任医师) or Chief Physician (主任医师) in recognised hospitals, preferably affiliated to tertiary institutions, in Mainland China.

  3. Clinical Fellow (normally 7 awards each year) for a training period of 3 months

    Emoluments:
    (a) HK$28,000 per month on a pro-rata basis (honorarium); and
    (b) HK$3,500 (round-trip economy airfare from the original city in Mainland China to Hong Kong)*

    Objective:
    To provide support for candidates to acquire advanced clinical skills and knowledge.

    Qualification:
    Candidates possessing a medical first degree from recognised tertiary institutions and currently working as Resident (住院医师) or Attending Physician (主治医师) in recognised hospitals, preferably affiliated to tertiary institutions, in Mainland China.

  4. Senior Clinical Research Fellow (normally 6 awards each year) for a training period of 4 months

    Emoluments:
    (a) HK$33,000 per month on a pro-rata basis (honorarium); and
    (b) HK$3,500 (round-trip economy airfare from the original city in Mainland China to Hong Kong)*

    Objective:
    To provide support for candidates to acquire advanced clinical skills and knowledge and conduct a research project relevant to their clinical specialties.

    Qualification:
    Candidates possessing a medical first degree from recognised tertiary institutions and currently working as Vice-Chief Physician (副主任医师) or Chief Physician (主任医师) in recognised hospitals, preferably affiliated to tertiary institutions, in Mainland China.

  5. Clinical Research Fellow (normally 6 awards each year) for a training period of 4 months

    Emoluments:
    (a) HK$28,000 per month on a pro-rata basis (honorarium); and
    (b) HK$3,500 (round-trip economy airfare from the original city in Mainland China to Hong Kong)*

    Objective:
    To provide support for candidates to acquire advanced clinical skills and knowledge and conduct a research project relevant to their clinical specialties.

    Qualification:
    Candidates possessing a medical first degree from recognised tertiary institutions and currently working as Resident (住院医师) or Attending Physician (主治医师) in recognised hospitals, preferably affiliated to tertiary institutions, in Mainland China.

  6. Health Care Management Fellow (normally 4 awards each year) for a training period of 1 month

    Emoluments:
    (a) HK$28,000 on a pro-rata basis (honorarium); and
    (b) HK$3,500 (round-trip economy airfare from the original city in Mainland China to Hong Kong)*

    Objective:
    To provide support for candidates to acquire the hospital management skills of international standard.

    Qualification:
    Senior administrators at managerial level in recognised hospitals, preferably affiliated to tertiary institutions.

* the actual amount to be reimbursed will be determined upon production of receipts.
