Professor Bishai joined HKUMed in March 2023 as Director of School of Public Health and Clinical Professor. Prior to joining HKU, Professor Bishai had served as Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for 27 years and served in the government as a health officer for the state of Maryland in 2021.

As a world-renowned educator, researcher, and practitioner, Professor Bishai has made lasting contributions to scholarship. A leading health economist, his research focuses on the performance and financing of global public health activities, primary healthcare, vaccines, and health disparities. He is the author of two books and more than 260 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and has raised USD50 million in grant support from NIH, CDC, World Bank, WHO, ADB and foundations. His award-winning courses on systems thinking and health economics have reached over forty-thousand students. As President of the International Health Economics Association, he helped to establish a global mentoring network for early career researchers. During his government service, he used local evidence to eradicate racial gaps in COVID vaccination.

Professor Bishai maintains certification by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard in Philosophy and Physics, his Masters in Public Health from the University of California at Los Angeles, his Medical Doctorate from the University of California at San Diego, and his Doctor of Philosophy from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Professor Rina Hui joined HKUMed in January 2023 as Director of Centre of Cancer Medicine and Clinical Professor. She is a medical oncologist specialising in breast and lung cancers as well as a passionate educator. 

After completing her medical degree at The University of Sydney and specialist training at The Royal North Shore Hospital, Professor Hui undertook translational research in cyclin D1-CDK4/6-p16INK4a-pRb pathway in breast cancer at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and was awarded a PhD degree. Before joining HKU, Professor Hui was a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney and a Senior Medical Oncologist at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia.  Professor Hui has been principal investigator on many clinical trials, including phase I as well as many landmark practice-changing phase III clinical studies of immunotherapy and targeted therapies in breast and lung cancers over the years resulting in publications in highly ranked journals.

 

Professor Poon joined the Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Medicine in August 2022 as Clinical Professor. He is an academic neurosurgeon with track record of doing good clinical and experimental research on brain injuries and neuro-oncology. Professor Poon has the passion and commitment in specialist training, has authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers and two monographs, and been awarded a 2nd Class Prize on Brain Injury Management by the National Science and Technology Department in 2010, and a 1st Class Prize on Acute Stroke Management by the Chinese Medical Association in 2015.

Dr Cheung joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, School of Clinical Medicine in November 2022 as Clinical Associate Professor. He is a Maternal and Fetal Medicine subspecialist of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and provides high quality obstetric and prenatal services to pregnant women. Dr Cheung is enthusiastic in research and works closely with other international experts in the field to actively promote women’s health and safe delivery. He also works with the World Health Organization to provide evidence-based clinical algorithms to manage abnormal labour. He was nominated by the college to be the Distinguished Young Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.

Dr Fong joined the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine in February 2023 as Clinical Associate Professor of Practice. She graduated from the University of Hong Kong with distinction in medicine and was the recipient of the Medic ’67 Gold Medal in Clinical Medicine. She completed her Master’s degree in Public Health from the School of Public Health in HKU with distinction in 2010 and specialized in ophthalmology in 2013. She went on to further her training in vitreoretina including overseas training in Belgium and Will's Eye Hospital in the United States. Her interests include vitreoretina surgeries, retinal imaging, artificial intelligence and translational care.

Dr Ip joined the Department of Anaesthesiology, School of Clinical Medicine in April 2023 as Clinical Associate Professor of Practice. He completed his MBChB education in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, followed by training in Anaesthesiology in the Queen Mary Hospital. After completion of fellowship, he underwent oversea training in University College London in United Kingdom and completed a Master of Science in Perioperative Medicine there. He was previously a Consultant Anaesthesiologist in the Queen Mary Hospital. His areas of interest are Perioperative medicine, vascular anaesthesia and anaesthesia for high risk surgery.

Dr Huang joined the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, School of Clinical Medicine in in April 2023 as Assistant Professor. Prior to joining HKU, he worked as Visiting Assistant Professor at City University of Hong Kong. Dr Huang received his BEng (2014) and MSc degrees (2017) from Xiamen University, and PhD degree (2021) from City University of Hong Kong. He continued to work as Postdoctoral Fellow at City University of Hong Kong with the support of the Research Grants Council (RGC) Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme (PDFS). Dr Huang was selected as a Junior Fellow of the International Society for Medical Magnetic Resonance (ISMRM) in 2022. He received the Young Investigator Award twice at international conferences (OCSMRM 2020 and International CEST Workshop 2018). His current research focuses on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), chemical exchange saturation transfer MRI (CEST MRI), medical image analysis and artificial intelligence

Dr Lee joined the Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine in November 2022 as Clinical Assistant Professor. Dr Lee obtained her fellowships from the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine in 2009 and the Hong Kong College of Psychiatry in 2019. She is currently an Honorary Associate Consultant in the Department of Psychiatry at Queen Mary Hospital and Honorary Senior Doctor at the Special Preventive Programme of the Centre for Health Protection. Her research interests include perinatal psychiatry, focusing on its epidemiology and also its influences on the development and mental health of the offspring. She is also interested in mental health in sexual minorities, especially the interplay between substance use, mental health and physical health.

Dr Lo joined the Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine in January 2023 as Clinical Assistant Professor. She graduated with her MBChB at Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014, and obtained her qualification of the Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of the United Kingdom in 2020. She completed her specialty training in year 2021.

Dr Lo works as a psychiatrist in Queen Mary Hospital and is dedicated to delivering good care in psychiatry and teaching. She has special interests in depression and novel treatments for it.

Outside of her work, she enjoys playing tennis and making ceramics.

Dr Tang joined the Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine joined in January 2023 as Clinical Assistant Professor of Practice. She received her medical degree from the University of Hong Kong in 2014 and obtained her qualification of the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom in 2016. Dr Tang completed her Rheumatology training in 2021 and Advanced Internal Medicine training in 2022. Her research interests include idiopathic inflammatory myopathies and connective tissue diseases. She also has special interests in osteoporosis and infective complications in patients with rheumatic diseases.

Dr Wong joined the Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine in December 2022 as Clinical Assistant Professor. He is appointed as an Honorary Resident in Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. Dr Wong obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Hong Kong in 2015. Subsequently he received clinical and interventional cardiology training in Queen Mary Hospital. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the University of Hong Kong. Dr Wong’s research interests include atrial fibrillation and stem cell science. To date, he has published over 40 articles in peer reviewer journals including Circulation (Impact Factor = 39.922).
