The Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine was honoured to have Professor Andrew W Taylor, Associate Dean for Research, Professor and Director of Research for Ophthalmology in Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine at Boston University, as speaker of a Seminar on 5 September 2023.

Professor Taylor delivered an informative seminar titled ‘Ocular Immune Privilege and Retinal Immunobiology.’ He addressed that the molecular mechanisms of ocular immune privilege include anti-inflammatory and cell survival pathways, and emphasised the critical role of the melanocortin system as a dominant pathway in maintaining ocular immune privilege. Additionally, Professor Taylor discussed immune privilege is not only an antagonism of pro-inflammatory signals, but a change in the cellular behavior of immune cells to support ocular health. The seminar attracted various groups of audience, including medical professionals, scientists and researchers.

Dr Amy CY Lo was moderator of the Seminar and engaged in the thought-provoking discussion, helping audience to gain a deeper understanding of ocular immune privilege and its implications in retinal immunobiology.
