Professor Hao F Zhang, Professor of Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University delivered an enlightening lecture titled ‘Bioengineering in Ophthalmology’ on 31 Jul 2023. He presented intriguing insights into how high-end engineering tools can be harnessed for studying biology and diagnostic aspects of eye diseases. He also shared the ways in which these innovative technologies contribute to a deeper understanding of the retina fiber layer and its implications in ocular health. The lecture attracted diverse attendees, including ophthalmologists and scientists eager to explore the interdisciplinary collaboration between engineering and ophthalmology.

Professor Christopher Leung Kai-shun was the moderator who engaged in the interactive session following the lecture, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the fusion of engineering and ophthalmology.

Mr Derek Hodkey, President and CEO of Orbis was invited as speaker for HKU Ophthalmology Distinguished Lecture on 30 May 2023. He delivered an insightful and inspiring lecture titled ‘The Orbis Model in Global Sight-saving: The Power of Innovation.’ He shared Orbis' unique approach of bringing advanced skills and technology to developing countries, drawing from his personal experience visiting Orbis programs in India, Ethiopia and Vietnam, and highlighted the role of innovation and telemedicine through their award-winning platform Cybersight, which has provided affordable and quality eye care to remote areas, transforming the lives of countless preventable blind individuals and their families. The lecture was well attended by ophthalmologists, scientists, HKU students and the public. Professor Christopher Leung Kai-shun served as a moderator and engaged Mr Hodkey in a thoughtful discussion following the lecture.
