The Faculty hosted the virtual Shaw Prize Lecture on Life Science and Medicine 2020 on 21 May 2021, attracting close to 600 participants from various digital platforms. 

The Shaw Prize is an international award to honour individuals who have achieved distinguished and significant advances in scientific research and applications. The Shaw Laureates in Life Science and Medicine 2020 Professor Gero Miesenböck of the University of Oxford, UK, Professor Peter Hegemann of the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany and Professor Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg, Germany gave a captivating sharing of their award-winning discoveries on the development of optogenetics, a technology that has revolutionised neuroscience. Facilitated by Professor Chan Ying-shing (陳應城), the Shaw Prize Laureate had a lively discussion among members of the universities, the scientific community and the general public during the live Q&A session.
