Amidst the third wave of COVID-19 infections in Hong Kong, the pandemic remained a hot topic in family e-chat groups. The frequency and reliability of information sent can affect the quality of family communication. With this in mind, the Jockey Club SMART Family-Link Project conducted a research study on the "Relationship between Information Sharing and Family Well-being during the COVID-19 Outbreak". The study was done via online questionnaires given to 4,914 people and results were announced at a press conference on 20 October 2020.

The results suggested that sending or receiving positive messages (e.g. happy or interesting messages related to themselves or their families, care, or encouragement) and fact-checked COVID-19 information in family e-chat groups was related to better family communication, greater family harmony, and happiness. In contrast, respondents sending or receiving health information frequently reported poorer family well-being.
