The School of Public Health conducted two BASc(GHD) Taster Lectures in November 2021 for local secondary school students to experience first-hand being a BASc(GHD) student.

On 5 November 2021, students from over eight local schools participated in the first taster lecture entitled ‘Refugee Crisis and Migration’ on HKU main campus. Dr Phyu Phyu Thin Zaw, the School’s Lecturer, kicked off the lecture by introducing participants to the topic of refugee crisis as well as the impacts of COVID-19 on migrant health. The session was followed by a captivating sharing by the guest lecturer Dr Khant Nyar Aung, on being an Assistant Surgeon and medical practitioner in Myanmar.

Riding on the positive response of the first lecture, the School organised a second Taster Lecture ‘Social Justice and Human Rights and its Relevance to Universal Health Coverage’ on 19 November 2021. The participants learned about the key themes in Social Justice and Human Rights from Dr Thin Zaw, while Dr Aderonke Odetayo, the guest lecturer, added on to the topic by sharing her experience working at Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) and Medecine de Rue Foundation, and as an Emergency Doctor in Nigeria.
