One of the clinical skills laboratories at the School of Nursing (the School), Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) was named “The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Nursing Clinical Skills Laboratory and Simulation Training Centre” at a ceremony held today (November 23), in recognition of the generosity and support of the Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation for the “Advanced Training in Clinical Nursing Education” organised by the School.  

Professor Sophia Chan Siu-chee, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, Government of the HKSAR, Dr Walton Li Wai-tat, Chairperson of Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation, Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU, and Professor Chia-Chin Lin, Head of School of Nursing, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU officiated at the naming ceremony.

The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation was established in March 1963 to promote and support medical education, medical research and medical charity in Hong Kong.  In 2016, the Foundation supported the School to launch the “Advanced Training in Clinical Nursing Education” which enabled clinical mentors, nurse educators and practicing nurses to achieve mastery in clinical teaching and mentoring and to sustain their clinical expertise.  The sophisticated training on clinical nursing education, which lasts for 3 years, is the first of its kind in Hong Kong.  Around 240 nurses will benefit from this programme.

To honour the support for the advanced training in clinical nursing education given by the Foundation to the School, the School named one of the newly renovated clinical skills laboratory located on 2/F, Pauline Chan Building, 10 Sassoon Road, after the Foundation as “The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Nursing Clinical Skills Laboratory and Simulation Training Centre”.  The newly renovated laboratory is equipped with sophisticated and computerised manikins and simulated clinical environment in which students will be able to practice total patient care and clinical decision making.  

In addressing the guests at the naming ceremony, Dr Walton Li Wai-tat, Chairperson of Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation, said, “Throughout the years, we have been endeavouring to strengthen healthcare services, the advanced training in clinical nursing education has helped enhance the quality of nursing care in the territory.”

Professor Chia-Chin Lin, Head of School of Nursing, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU expressed the Faculty’s gratitude to Dr Walton Li Wai-tat and his Foundation, aligning with the mission of the Foundation and the School, the School will make use of this laboratory to help further enhance the nursing clinical skills in the region and globally.
