Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine congratulates Professor John Leong Chi-yan* on his appointment by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government as the Chairman designate of Hospital Authority (HA) today (October 8, 2013). With Professor Leong’s outstanding academic achievements and exceptional management experience in public healthcare, the HA will surely progress inexorably in delivering world-class healthcare services to the Hong Kong community under his visionary leadership.

Professor Leong has made substantial contributions to HKU and the Medical Faculty. He has spared no effort in tertiary education and training. The Hong Kong public healthcare system is facing unprecedented challenges. The Faculty will continue to work closely with HA to improve the medical services and the standards of healthcare professionals in Hong Kong. The redevelopment of Queen Mary Hospital is inseparably linked to the future of the Medical Faculty, and we will strive to facilitate the Hospital in performing its unique role as a teaching hospital, and advancing local clinical and scientific research.

* Note: Professor John Leong Chi-yan an eminent orthopaedist and academic. He graduated from HKU with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1965, and continuously worked in HKU for 38 years. He had served subsequently as Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. From 1985 to 1990, Professor Leong assumed the position of Dean of Medicine at HKU. With his effective leadership, the Faculty achieved higher level of internationalisation and his success was widely recognised. Professor Leong is currently an Emeritus Professor of HKU, and Honorary Professor of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Department of Biochemistry. HKU conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science on Professor Leong in 2011 for his dedication to Hong Kong and the academia.
