Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (Faculty) of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) hosted a Homecoming Dinner to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Faculty.  3,500 alumni and guests attended this memorable evening to mark the milestone of the Faculty and to share the joyful moment.  “Wisdom, Compassion, Commitment” being the theme of the Homecoming Dinner was verified through a series of activities to conclude this meaningful and unforgettable event.

Joining Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Medicine, in the evening of December 17 (Sunday), were the Guest of Honour, the Hon Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Chancellor of HKU, Dr the Hon Sir David Li, Pro-Chancellor of HKU, Professor the Hon Arthur Li, Chairman of the Council of HKU, Professor Peter Mathieson, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, who had witnessed the opening of this special event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

A spectacular “Brass Fanfare in Celebration of 130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong” marked the opening of the Homecoming Dinner.  Behind the enchanting music was Mr Matthew Martin, Director of Music of Keble College, Oxford University, who composed the song as a special birthday present to the Faculty.  Following the Brass Fanfare was a heart-warming musical interspersed with numerous golden oldies and top hits arranged by acclaimed local musician Chiu Tsang-hei and played on stage by over 50 medical students to highlight the achievement of the Faculty over the last 130 years.

While feeling proud of the Faculty for its remarkable achievement, Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mathieson also applauded the Faculty for its enormous contribution to both The University of Hong Kong and the community as a whole. "My sincere congratulations to the Faculty as it celebrates 130 years of medical education in Hong Kong. Welcome to all the international guests that are here to help us to commemorate the milestone. HKU is proud of the contributions in medicine and related subjects that have been made here over the years, and looks forward to many more,” Professor Mathieson said.

Over the last 130 years, the Medical Faculty is inextricably linked with the development of medicine in Hong Kong and the surrounding region while at once being intertwined with the city’s development. Thanks to the devoting teaching staff of the Faculty who have nurtured thousands of outstanding medical workers throughout the 130 years to serve Hong Kong.

“The Faculty will continue to follow its venerable traditions to excel itself in teaching and learning, research and discovery, clinical service and knowledge exchange to the next generation in a way to nurture more medical workers who are with Wisdom, Compassion and Commitment, who would go on to serve the people locally, nationally and around the world, thus leading to sustainable social development through better health,” said Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Medicine.

Following a series of spectacular opening activities, Professor Rosie Young, Former Dean of Medicine and Co-chair of 130 Board of Overseers and Professor Raymond Liang, Former Dean of Medicine and Chairman of 130 Steering Committee, together with honourable guests held a cake cutting ceremony and made a toast to mark the celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Faculty, and hope that with its legacy and present achievements the Faculty would continue to create more forward-looking teaching and research excellence for the advancement of the health and wellbeing of the Hong Kong people.
